Ozark Fisheries History: Selling Our First Goldfish

For the first installment of the Ozark Fisheries History posts we will be going back to the beginning and looking at selling our first goldfish.

Ozark Fisheries began in 1926 by two men F. Lawrence Bailliere and Dr. Charles A. Furrow. What started out as a venture in raising trout, soon turn to goldfish, with an emphasis in the fancy varieties of goldfish.

Ozark Fisheries sold its first shipment of goldfish on December 11, 1928 – three shipments totaling 1,035 goldfish for total sales of $55.50, this represented the total goldfish sales for 1928. Below is a handwritten invoice shows that Shubunkins, Commons, and Pearls were sold in  that first shipment.

Here is a look at one of the first brochures produced by Ozark Fisheries announcing its establishment as a new company. Also you might notice that this brochure says that we are located in Richland, Missouri, though we are currently located in Stoutland. We have been in this same location in Missouri since 1926, but we have been around so long the boundary lines changed!

Be sure to check back next week to learn more about Ozark Fisheries first fish biologist, Roy Nakashima!
